This is a 2-part travel story about our experience of open water exposure with Swim Central Philippines. In this page, we will talk about our experience regarding freediving and the summary of this wonderful event.
Second Part: Introduction to Freediving
After our siesta, coach Mark gathered the students and discussed about the next activity. This time, it’s all about freediving. It’s a form of underwater diving without the use of any breathing apparatus or scuba gear. We are just going to rely on our ability to hold our breath.
During the short lecture, we were taught on how to do a 2-minute breathe-up before doing a breath hold. The 2-minute breath is beneficial in calming our body before the long breath hold. On my first try, I was able to hold my breath for 44 seconds. I think that’s good for a beginner. For others, they can even hold their breath up to 2 minutes. Now that’s something I’ll be looking forward to.
For this activity, we’re going to do a free immersion dive. It’s a freediving discipline wherein we have to dive underwater by pulling on the guide rope from descent to ascent.
A floatation device is present on top of the dive line. We wore a diving mask and a snorkel for this activity. In the picture above, we are performing the 2-minute breathe-up to relax our bodies before holding our breath and descending through the dive line. When my turn came up, I inhaled a huge chunk of air, held my breath and plunged.
As I reached 20 feet, I started to feel pain from my ears which makes me decide to swim up in the surface. Again, not bad for a first timer.
During the activity, our coaches kept on reminding us to equalize in every meter of the dive to prevent any ear complication. This is Angie (at the back) and I doing our second dive while equalizing pressure.
For the second time, I was able to dive even deeper. Even Angie was able to reach the seafloor for the second attempt! After the free immersion activity, we spent the remaining time skin diving around the area. Thank God the water was clearer than in the morning and we were able to view the fascinating Balai rock.
Overall, the open water exposure program of Swim Central Philippines was a big success! We had a great time in this one-of-a-kind event, learned a lot of new things and enjoyed delicious food from Balai Resort. The experience was amazing, fun and memorable.
From a simple desire turned into a lifestyle, the amazing coaches of Swim Central played a big role in achieving this goal. They are all patient, accommodating and informative which makes learning easier and fun. Kudos to the whole team of Swim Central!
